Trip Chaining Helps Save Money and Conserve Gas

Trip chain = grouping errands and other activities into one trip instead of returning home in between each one. The more errands you group together, the more vehicle trips you save because of less miles traveled and the more fuel you conserve. There is also less pollution from cold starts - starting your car after it has been siting long enough for the engine to cool!  According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency MOBILE6 model run performed by the Federal Highway Administration, emissions are highest when a vehicle is started "cold." For example, starting a 5-mile trip when the engine is cold generates about 17% more nitrogen oxides and 50% more volatile organic compounds than the same trip when the car is started warm.
